Relationship Reflection

Relationships are the building blocks for healthy development in early childhood.  However they are so much more than that.  Throughout our lives our relationships grow, change, end, and begin.  They can be complex or superficial.  In my life I find relationships to be something that is so crucial to my continued personal growth.  The relationship that I have with my family is one of the most important.

I grew up with seven siblings so the dynamic is complex and overlapping at times.  Today I cherish each relationship individually, as all my siblings are different in their morals, values, and identities.  We have learned to respect one another and the decisions that we make and we always strive to support one another.  We work hard to stay in touch.  Today's busy work and life schedules can make it difficult to connect with one another regularly, however the effort you put into your relationships is oftentimes reflected in what you gain from relationships.

Another very important relationship in my life is the one I have with my best girlfriends.  Sometimes there are things that we do not wish to share with our family due to the nature or context of situations and events.  Having close friends to share in a comfortable and positive relationship is very important for me to maintain.  Always supporting one another, sharing in our ups and downs, and most importantly just being there to listen.  These are just some of the aspects that I value in my relationships with my friends.

There will always be challenges in maintaining healthy relationships, whether it be geography or disputes.  Working hard to communicate and maintain honesty is essential to develop and keep healthy relationships.  One thing that all healthy relationships have in common is that each person in the relationship puts forth effort and time to maintain them.  Honesty is also a key aspect of maintaining healthy relationships.

I see the relationships that I have formed in my life affecting my career in early childhood education because they have all taught me something and helped my communication skills with others.  Learning to clearly communicate your thoughts, feelings, and emotions is essential to having healthy relationships.  When building new relationships with staff, families, and children it will important that I reflect upon my actions and words and attempt to understand and effectively communicate.
