My Connections to Play

Quotes:

"Life is more full fun if you play games" - Roald Dahl

"Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me -
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be."   -Shel Silverstein

This is my grandmother and sister and I strolling through the neighborhood.

All of the kids had these hot wheel tricycles that we used to race around the driveway.

I grew up in a large family with eight children.  There was always someone to play with every day. Our parents encouraged our independence but made an effort to have all their children play together and develop healthy relationships.  We learned how to share very early on and understood the importance of respecting other people's things.  I specifically remember my grandmother taking time to buy toys that I was interested in (even though she was probably bored).  But the significance was that she made sure to make time for us individually and take into respect our interests.

Today play has changed significantly.  I see so many children with iPads and electronic devices that parents oftentimes use as distractions so that they can accomplish their many tasks.  I do not think there is anything wrong with allowing children time with electronics, however I do think that getting outside and pretend playing is something that isn't seen as often anymore.  Balance is a key factor in a child's life and they need to be regulated with the kinds of play they are involved in.

Play was essential throughout my childhood and will remain a top priority throughout my life.  Society overwhelms us with endless tasks, errands, assignments, and responsibilities.  Adults especially need to take time out of their busy schedules to play and participate in activities that relieve stress and bring happiness and joy into their lives.
